Smallbore - Michaelmas and Hilary terms

During Michaelmas and Hilary terms, the club’s main activity is smallbore shooting. This is shooting with .22 rifles at targets 25 yards away. It is usually shot lying down (prone), but we also shoot kneeling and standing.

We have a brand new, state of the art range, just outside the city centre in Cowley (click here for directions). There are six 25 yard lanes and a reasonably priced bar immediately above it.

Training Sessions

The club has excellent coaching and expertise and is committed to training its members to a very high standard. Most club members did not shoot before coming to Oxford and now shoot at a very high level.

Training sessions are held on Monday evenings from 19.00-22.00, and on Wednesday/Thursday Afternoons subject to arrangements. Additional team practice may be held on Sunday afternoon, as arranged by the President.

Competitions

The club enters both teams and individuals into the BUSA (British University Sports Association) postal leagues. This is a great way to compete against other universities from the convenience of our own range.

The Club also has regular “shoulder to shoulder” matches against other universities. These are usually competitive but also very social and are the best practice for the Varsity matches.

The smallbore varsity match is the culmination of our smallbore shooting and is usually held at the end of Hillary term. There are four smallbore Varsity matches - the Heslop (A-team match), the Kensington (B-team match), the Bentata (Ladies’ teams match) and the Lerman (three positions match), so plenty of opportunity for people of different standards to get to shoot. Shooting in the A-team or getting a score above 190 in the ladies team entitles you to a half blue. A score above 195 in the A-team is one of the criteria that must be met to obtain a full blue (see blues guidelines in the members’ section).
